3. upload/download input/output files with the server
Details:
The user interface composes of the 3D viewing area, and a small menu/tools area. The user begins by uploading to the server a set of images using the tools area (file-browse or drag&drop from the desktop). The application receives from the server a 3D mesh (containing vertex position, normal and texture coordinates and texture) which needs to be displayed. The user can view, zoom and navigate the 3D scene. The scene is composed of single textured mesh, and there are no lights. He can export the 3D model and/or stop at any time. Additionally the position and orientation of each photo is received. This data is displayed in the 3D scene by a generic semi-transparent icon (a quad) that once hovered with the cursor highlights and displays the thumbnail of the photo. The editing tools should allow the user to select a main interest area of the mesh by defining graphically a 3D axes-aligned bounding box. The user could continue by requesting from the server a more detailed 3D object. Both times the response from the server takes a relatively long time (between 15 and 60 minutes). Therefore the user can chose to be announced by email when the job is completed. The server should have a way to identify the users and the application should continue from the previous state. As much as possible data should be cached locally on the user's computer, and the network traffic minimized.
